Upcoming trials in mpls downtown update (3/20/21)

March 20, 2021 By EDC

As the second week of jury selection wraps up in the State of Minnesota vs. Derek Chauvin Trial, we continue to be confident in the planning and preparation that is helping to keep downtown operating while protecting and honoring the first amendment right to peacefully protest. Both have happened over the past two weeks. Downtown remains open, and we continue to approach our daily work as the trial proceedings continue.

Looking ahead, the previously anticipated trial timeline remains in place with opening statements set for March 29. On Friday morning, Judge Cahill rejected motions to delay the trial or move it to a new location. The trial will remain at Hennepin County Government Center. As of this email, 13 jurors have been seated. Judge Cahill is looking to fill 15 juror seats so they have the 12 jurors and 2 alternates needed when opening statements begin on March 29.

We will continue to keep you up to date with information on trial proceedings as they happen. Remember the mdc trial resource page at www.mplsdowntown.com/trial includes FAQs, the expected trial timeline, helpful phone numbers and web links, maps, general downtown skyway and business updates, and more. This page will be updated regularly.

The City of Minneapolis’ trial resource page can be found at: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/programs-initiatives/trial-support-safety.

Operation Safety Net (OSN) continues to provide updates, and you can learn more on their website at https://safetynet.mn.gov/Pages/default.aspx or its social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. We expect the next OSN briefing to be Monday, March 22 at 2pm.

Thanks for your continued partnership and support,
