Upcoming trials in mpls downtown update (3/23/21)

March 23, 2021 By EDC

Jury selection wrapped up today in the State of Minnesota vs. Derek Chauvin trial. Opening statements will begin Monday, and as of today, 15 jurors have been selected to ensure there will be 12 jurors and two alternates ready for opening statements. The court is now in recess until Monday, March 29 at 9 am.

As the trial proceedings continue, mpls downtown continues to be open and fully operating daily.

As we look ahead, Operation Safety Net noted at this week’s news briefing that you may see proactive levels of law enforcement as the trial progresses, but only as deemed necessary based on intelligence needs and to honor the first amendment right to peacefully protest.

Throughout, Metro Transit continues to operate at its regular capacity and encourages you to sign up for rider alerts at www.metrotransit.org/rider-alerts if you’d like more information. You can also reach out to their information center (612-373-3333) or follow for updates on Facebook and Twitter.

We will continue to keep you up to date with information on trial proceedings as they happen. Remember the mdc trial resource page at www.mplsdowntown.com/trial includes FAQs, the expected trial timeline, helpful phone numbers and web links, maps, general downtown skyway and business updates, and more. This page will be updated regularly.

The City of Minneapolis’ trial resource page can be found at: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/programs-initiatives/trial-support-safety. We expect the next City of Minneapolis news briefing to be Thursday, March 25 at 10:30 am.

Operation Safety Net (OSN) continues to provide updates, and you can learn more on their website at https://safetynet.mn.gov/Pages/default.aspx or its social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. We expect the next OSN briefing to be Monday, March 29 at 2 pm.

Thanks for your continued partnership and support,
